First Harvest!
As part of our efforts to help the orphanage become self-sufficient, we purchased two parcels of land, totaling about 5 acres, for them to grow crops now and for future development. The first planting consisted of:
Maize (corn) 2 acres
Potatoes ¼ acres
Cassava ¼ acres
The maize has been harvested with our children involved! The yield was 1,465 kg (3,230 lbs.), which, when ground, will yield 1,245 kg (2,745 lbs.) of corn flour.
The potatoes and cassava are still to come. And the residual left over from the grinding can be used for chicken and pig feed (both future projects).
